Weird Names

This is a quite shocking article on naming children from the BBC Learning English webpage. Students could read this article aloud in class and try to guess the meaning of the words and expressions in bold.

Jokes

A funny lesson, ideal for a Friday class (approximately 30-35 minutes).

Activity 1: Students read and complete these English jokes individually or in pairs. Then some volunteers read them aloud to correct the exercise.

Activity 2: The teacher prints several jokes from this website, cuts them in pieces and gives a piece with just one joke to some students. Those who got a piece of paper go to the front of the class and tell their joke to their classmates. The teacher should decide if they are allowed to read their joke or if they must memorise it first and tell it afterwards.

Scotland

This activity is designed to be done in a computer lab so that each student can do this webquest individually. The aim of this lesson is to teach students about Scotland and its culture, as part of the United Kingdom.

Teachers should give students some time to find the answers to the questions and could tell their students to share them afterwards.

It would be nice to link this activity to another lesson related to Scotland (such as the video 'Eleven', which deals with the Scottish accent) or to listen to a famous song by a Scottish band, e.g.: 'Chasing Cars' by Snow Patrol.

Be careful what you tweet

Teachers may like to read with their students this striking newspaper article on two British turists who got arrested when visiting the USA due to some comments they had published on Twitter prior to their visit.

It would be interesting to read the text aloud and explain the vocabulary students may have difficulty with, since the news has not been adapted to foreign learners of English.

Teachers may also like to have a debate in class and ask students about social networks and the sort of things they publish on Twitter or Facebook.

V-DAY

San Valentine's day is approaching.
A good way to deal with this topic is to let our students get in the mood for celebrating it and then stimulate a debate on the over commercialized celebration.
The following  activity will take more than one period and will cover both reading/creating a poem and a class discussion on the meaning of some adverts shown  in the US.
They can read about history and traditions here:
